The Known World, The Seven Kingdoms

The Seven Kingdoms of Westeros are subdivided into nine regions. The largest and least-populated region is known for its winter colds and loyalty to honor and is ruled by House Stark. Winterfell the stronghold of House Stark, is located in the middle of the region, and the Wall protects it from the wilderness and White Walkers.

To the south, the Lannisters of Casterly Rock govern the Westerlands an area known for rich gold mines Their power extends to King’s Landing where the Baratheons and later the Lannisters reign from the Iron Throne. The Tyrells of Highgarden hold sway over the Reach, feeding the realm.

Dorne, ruled by the Martells, is an exception with its Rhoynish roots and history of opposing the Targaryens. The Vale is guarded by mountains and governed by the Arryns, and the Riverlands and Iron Islands are regularly contested because of their strategic locations. Every kingdom has  different customs, so Westeros is a place of never-ending warring and alliances.

Key Locations in Westeros

King’s Landing

TV review King’s Landing Power, betrayal and Fire in the Seven Kingdoms Capital. Home to the Red Keep and the Iron Throne it is where Cersei Lannister and later Daenerys Targaryen stake out their last stands. The Great Sept of Baelor and Flea Bottom illustrate the city’s inequalities of nobility and poverty.

Winterfell

The seat of the northern House Stark, Winterfell, was built by Brandon the Builder. Its crypts contain the tombs of Stark kings , and its godswood is one of the last places in the world where the old gods are still worshipped. The rise and fall of the castle parallels that of the Starks themselves.

The Wall and Beyond

A 700-foot-tall wall of ice the Wall is a barrier between Westeros and the untamed wilderness to the north. It is protected by the Night’s Watch, whose ranks gradually thin. Even further north are the Haunted Forest and the lands of the Free Folk, who will not bend their knees to Southern leaders.

The Free Cities of Essos

The continent of Essos contains independent city-states like the Free Cities, each with a distinctive culture. Braavos, the richest of the seven, serves as a trade center and the headquarters of the Faceless Men. Pentos and Volantis are hubs of trade and slavery and Lys is renowned for its pleasure houses.

Daenerys starts in Essos freeing enslaved people in Astapor Yunkai and Meereen. These cities — former sites of Slaver’s Bay — become key to her ascent as the Mother of Dragons. Another huge region is the Dothraki Sea, in which strength is power, ruled by horse lords.

The Doom of Valyria

Valyria was once the world’s greatest civilization and empire before being annihilated by a calamity known as the Doom. Its influence remains in Valyrian steel weapons and the Last Dragons. Valyria seems cursed, and many people are afraid to explore it.

Real-World Inspirations

Real history formed the basis of Martin’s world:

  • Westeros ≈ Medieval Europe
  • Dorne ≈ Spain & North Africa
  • Braavos ≈ Venice
  • The Dothraki ≈ Mongol Empire

Why the Map Matters

The setting molds the story — wars are waged over castles, characters’ trajectories are determined by terrain, and cultures collide because of borders. Understanding the map makes rewatching, or rereading, all the more rewarding.
